Why I Love Radio

Up and Down the Dial - Good Vibes and Great Memories on my Radio Journey….

Ever wonder why radio is still popular even with competing media streaming ?  Well, from my viewpoint, whether it’s road trips with the family or late night drives, there’s something unique and magical about live radio.

When I was young, I was drawn to Boom 97.3FM. Back in 2010 I remember hearing Platinum Blonde for the first time driving to school in Toronto. It was magical. I felt like I was at a concert, imagining the crowd and stage show. I was hooked. Right away I saw radio as an easy way to enjoy new music and hear new bands. It also introduced me to new music genres. More recently, I learned to love Country Music after turning the dial by accident to KX 94.7.

There’s something extra special about hearing a random song on the radio that I love. I find it so much more spontaneous than searching for one on a streaming platform. It’s like a big surprise!

I also really enjoy the DJs, some of whom are super funny. I think listeners become sort of loyal to them. It’s like they become part of your extended family. Hopping into the car and hearing your favorite DJ is comforting.

Listening to so much music led me to buy a turntable and start collecting vinyl. The vinyl goes round and round, just like this music snowball which keeps growing.

Like many, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to pursue for a job and career so I  started taking general classes at College. While there I learned about a Radio and Creative Content program and thought…..’Is this for real? You can actually have fun at school? I’d found my program!

Though I still have a way to go before graduation, I’d love to work in radio one day. They say doing what you love doesn’t feel like work, so I thought what better way to spend my time?

I know some use radio to help them get away from the stress of daily life for a bit. It’s a break from reality. Even for a few minutes, it can change your state of mind. For me, I figured why not have this as a full-time job. For others, it could simply be while stuck in traffic. Have you ever heard one of those songs that makes you feel like rolling down your windows and singing from the top of your lungs?

Next time you’re in the car, why don’t you rediscover the joys of radio? If you’re a passenger, give your phone a break and tune into a new station. There’s a lot more than your usual favorites. And maybe, one day, if I’m lucky and work hard, you might hear me while you do.
